Merzouga or Zagora: How to Choose Your Desert Route

Practical advice from our local experts to help you plan your Morocco trip.

Merzouga or Zagora? Compare the Erg Chebbi dunes with the Draa Valley, and learn how to choose the right desert route from Marrakech.

The short answer

Choose Merzouga if your main goal is to see the great sand dunes of Erg Chebbi and you can spend several days on the road. Consider Zagora if you have less time and like the idea of travelling through the Draa Valley and its palm groves.

Neither is better for everyone. The right choice depends on your days, the landscape you want and the pace you prefer.

What Merzouga offers

Merzouga is the village at the edge of Erg Chebbi, the largest sand dunes in Morocco. The dunes are tall, golden and change colour from sunrise to sunset, which is why most travellers who dream of the Sahara choose it.

Desert camps, camel rides and nights under the stars are the classic experiences here. The journey from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas and passes places such as Ait Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorges, so the route is part of the trip.

What Zagora offers

Zagora lies in the Draa Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves, villages and kasbahs between mountains and desert. It is closer to Marrakech than Merzouga, so it can suit a shorter trip.

The landscape is different from Erg Chebbi. Expect oases, rocky desert and a gentler introduction to the south of Morocco rather than very tall dunes.

How to decide

Think about three things: how many days you have, what you want to see, and how long you are happy to spend travelling each day. A longer route means more time on the road but more variety on the way.

Tell us your dates and interests and we will recommend the best option. Our private tours from Marrakech to Merzouga last 2, 3 or 4 days and include a night in a desert camp.
