The short answer
You can reach the Sahara dunes from Marrakech on a private excursion of 2, 3 or 4 days. The destination is Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes, about 560 km away, with a night in a desert camp and a camel ride at sunset. The 3-day tour is the classic choice, the 2-day tour suits short stays and the 4-day tour is the most relaxed. Highlights Morocco Tours organises all three, with a private driver and a local guide.
This guide explains the options, the route, the best time to go and what to pack, so you can choose with confidence. If you prefer to talk to a person, message us on WhatsApp and tell us your dates: we reply with a free quote.
Sahara excursions from Marrakech, by length
The Sahara is not around the corner. Marrakech is a long way from the big dunes, so the number of days changes the whole trip. These are the options we organise most often.
| Excursion | Length | What it is like |
|---|---|---|
| 2-day Marrakech to Merzouga | 2 days, 1 night | A quick Sahara escape. About 9 to 10 hours of driving each day. |
| 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga | 3 days, 2 nights | The classic Sahara trip, with a camel ride at sunset and a balanced pace. |
| 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga | 4 days, 3 nights | Our most popular tour: more time in the desert and shorter driving days. |
| Longer, tailor-made | 5 days or more | Add Fes, the imperial cities or more nights in the dunes. Ask us. |
If you only have one day, the Sahara dunes are too far. Our day trips from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley, Ouzoud Waterfalls and Ait Ben Haddou are a better use of the day.
Not sure which Sahara excursion to choose?
Tell us how many days you have and who is travelling. We recommend the best option and send a free quote.
Which Sahara excursion is right for you?
- You have 2 days: choose the 2-day tour. It is a long road, but it gets you to the dunes.
- It is your first time in Morocco: the 3-day tour is the classic, with time for Ait Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorges.
- You want a relaxed pace or travel with family: choose the 4-day tour, with shorter driving days.
- You want a camel ride and a camp night: all three include a night in a Merzouga desert camp, and the camel ride is arranged on request.
- You are comparing deserts: read Merzouga or Zagora to see the difference.
The route: what you see on the way to the Sahara
Half of the experience is the road. The excursion from Marrakech to Merzouga crosses the High Atlas and follows the valleys of the south-east. These are the main stops.
- Tizi n'Tichka pass: the High Atlas road, with sweeping views and photo stops.
- Ait Ben Haddou: a UNESCO-listed ksar of red-earth towers and a classic film location.
- Ouarzazate: the gateway to the Sahara, known for its kasbahs and film studios.
- Dades Valley and Todra Gorges: rock formations, palm groves, kasbahs and canyon walls.
- Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: the tall golden dunes where the road ends.
For centuries, caravans crossed these mountains between the Sahara and Marrakech, and the ksour and kasbahs you pass grew along those trade routes. A caravanserai was the roadside inn where the caravans and their camels rested. You can see the route on the map of our 3-day tour.
Your night in the desert camp
In Merzouga you leave the car and move into a desert camp at the edge of the dunes. A typical evening starts with the light changing over the dunes at sunset, often with a camel ride, followed by dinner and a night under the stars. Many travellers wake up early to watch the sunrise before the road back to Marrakech.
Camps vary, from simple to more comfortable. Tell us what you prefer, and we confirm the details of your camp in your free quote.

Costs and quotes
We do not publish fixed prices, because the cost depends on your dates, the number of travellers, the number of days and the type of camp. Sahara excursions from Marrakech: frequently asked questions
Can you visit the Sahara from Marrakech?
Yes. The Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga are about 560 km from Marrakech, so most travellers go on a desert tour of 2 to 4 days with a night in a desert camp. A private driver and a local guide make the long road easier.
How many days do you need for a Sahara excursion from Marrakech?
Plan at least 2 days. The 3-day tour is the classic option because the long drive is split in two, and the 4-day tour is the most relaxed. A one-day trip does not reach the big dunes.
What is the best Sahara excursion from Marrakech?
For most first-time visitors, the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour is the best balance of road, sights and time in the dunes. If you are short on time, choose the 2-day tour; if you want a slow pace, choose the 4-day tour.
Is the 2-day Sahara tour from Marrakech too much driving?
It is intense. You drive about 9 to 10 hours on each of the two days. Many travellers prefer 3 or 4 days, but the 2-day tour works if you are short on time and enjoy the road.
Where do you sleep on a Sahara excursion?
You spend a night in a desert camp in Merzouga, close to the Erg Chebbi dunes. On tours of 3 or 4 days, the other nights are spent on the road, for example in the Dades or Todra area. We confirm the places in your quote.
Can I ride a camel in the Sahara?
Yes. A camel ride at sunset in the Erg Chebbi dunes is a classic part of the trip. The timing depends on the season and your arrival time, so tell us when you ask for your quote.
What is the best time of year for a Sahara tour from Marrakech?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are usually the most comfortable seasons. Summer is very hot and winter nights in the desert can be cold.
What should I pack for the Sahara?
Light layers and a warm jacket for the night, a scarf, sunglasses, sun cream, closed shoes, a small bag for the camp, a phone charger and some cash for drinks and tips.
Is a private Sahara tour better than a group tour?
A private tour gives you your own driver and guide and a flexible pace, which suits couples, families and small groups. Group tours can cost less per person but follow a fixed schedule.
How much does a Sahara desert excursion from Marrakech cost?
The price depends on your dates, the number of travellers, the number of days and the type of camp. We quote on request, and quotes are free and come with no obligation.
Can I do a Sahara tour from Marrakech in one day?
Not comfortably. The big dunes are too far for a day trip. For one day, we recommend the Ourika Valley, Ouzoud Waterfalls or Ait Ben Haddou, and for the Sahara, at least 2 days.
