Discover Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar near Ouarzazate, and how to include it in a trip between Marrakech and the Sahara desert.
What is Ait Ben Haddou?
Ait Ben Haddou is a ksar, a fortified village of earthen buildings, on a hillside near Ouarzazate. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the best-known sights in Morocco.
It stood on one of the old caravan routes between the Sahara and Marrakech, and its towers and walls have appeared in many films.
Why stop here?
The ksar is easy to combine with a trip from Marrakech across the High Atlas to the desert. Walking up through its lanes gives wide views over the valley and the palm groves below.
It also helps to break up the journey: it is a natural stop between Marrakech and places such as the Todra Gorges or Merzouga.
How to include it in your trip
On our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour, Ait Ben Haddou is one of the stops on the way. You can also visit it as a long day trip from Marrakech, although many travellers prefer to continue to the desert.
Early or late in the day usually gives softer light for photos and fewer people on the paths.
Tips
Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths are uneven and can be hot at midday. Bring water and sun protection.
Ask us to include it in your private itinerary and we will plan the timing around your day.
