What is a Morocco tour?
A Morocco tour is a guided trip through the country, usually combining cities such as Marrakech and Fes with the High Atlas, kasbahs and the Sahara desert. Private Morocco tours, like those of Highlights Morocco Tours, give you your own driver and local guide, with riads and desert camps arranged for you. Most travellers choose between day trips, a 2 to 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour, or a longer tailor-made tour of a week or more.
Morocco packs a lot into a small map: the red city of Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains, kasbahs and ksour built of earth, palm-filled valleys, the imperial cities and the golden dunes of the Sahara. A Morocco tour is the easiest way to see several of them in one trip, because the distances are long and the roads in the mountains are slow.
On a private tour you do not follow a fixed bus schedule. You have your own driver and a local guide, you stop where you like and you sleep in places chosen for you, such as riads in the medinas and camps in the dunes. That is how we work at Highlights Morocco Tours, and it is why most of this guide is about private trips.
Below you will find the main types of tours, the most popular packages from Marrakech, an overview of where tours go, and practical answers to the questions travellers ask us most: how many days you need, when to go, what to pack and how to choose a tour operator.

When to go
The best time to visit Morocco
Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable for touring and for the Sahara.
| Season | What to expect | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (March to May) | Warm days and mild nights, green countryside. | One of the best times for the desert and the cities |
| Summer (June to August) | Very hot in Marrakech, the desert and the interior. | Better for the coast or the mountains |
| Autumn (September to November) | Warm days and cooler nights. | Another very good season for the Sahara |
| Winter (December to February) | Mild days, cold nights in the desert, snow possible in the Atlas. | Good for the cities, bring warm layers for the camp |
Sahara desert tours
Sahara desert tours: what to expect
Most Sahara desert tours from Marrakech head for Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. The route crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stops at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar, and follows the valleys of the south-east through Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorges.
In Merzouga you spend the night in a desert camp. A camel ride at sunset is a classic part of the trip, and many travellers wake up early to see the sunrise over the dunes. If you are choosing between desert destinations, our guide Merzouga or Zagora compares them.
Distances are long, about 560 km between Marrakech and Merzouga, so the number of days you choose changes the pace of the trip: 2 days is a quick escape, 3 days is the classic trip and 4 days is the most relaxed. Read the pages of our 2-day, 3-day and 4-day tours for the day-by-day itinerary and map.

Travel tips
Morocco travel tips before you go
- Dress modestly outside tourist areas and in religious sites, and bring a scarf for the sun.
- Bring layers: Sahara nights are cold, even after a hot day.
- Drink bottled water and carry sun cream, sunglasses and a hat.
- Carry some dirham in cash for markets, tips and small purchases.
- Agree prices before you buy or take a taxi, and watch your belongings in crowded places.
- Ask before you take photos of people, and respect local customs.
- Ramadan dates change every year, so tell us when you travel and we adapt the plan.
- Allow time on the road: distances in Morocco are long and the mountain passes are slow.
Choosing a tour
How to choose a Morocco tour operator
- Ask whether the tour is private or shared, and who travels with you.
- Ask what is included: transport, guide, accommodation, meals and camp.
- Check the daily driving hours and how many nights you spend in the desert.
- Read the day-by-day itinerary and ask what you can change.
- Check that guides speak your language, and that there is support during the trip.
- Ask how to contact the operator if something changes on the road.

FAQ
Morocco tours: frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions travellers ask us most.
What is the best Morocco tour for first-time visitors?
For a first visit, many travellers combine Marrakech with a Sahara desert trip. The 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour is the classic option, and the 4-day tour is more relaxed. If you have more time, you can add Fes and the imperial cities in a tailor-made tour.
How many days do I need for a Morocco tour?
One day is enough for a day trip such as Ourika Valley or Ouzoud Waterfalls. For the Sahara, plan at least 2 days, and 3 or 4 days if you prefer a slower pace. A week or more lets you combine Marrakech, the desert and the imperial cities.
When is the best time to visit Morocco?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are usually the most comfortable seasons. Summer is very hot in Marrakech and the desert, and winter nights in the Sahara can be cold.
Is Morocco safe for tourists?
Morocco is generally considered a welcoming destination for visitors. As anywhere, take normal precautions: watch your belongings in crowded places, agree prices in advance and follow your guide's advice. Check your government's travel advice before you go.
What should I wear in Morocco?
Dress modestly, especially outside tourist areas and when you visit mosques or religious sites: cover shoulders and knees. Light, loose clothes work best in the heat, and a scarf is useful for the sun and the dust. Bring warm layers for the desert night.
Do I need a visa for Morocco?
Entry rules depend on your nationality and can change, so check with official sources or your embassy before you travel. We cannot give visa advice.
What currency is used in Morocco?
The Moroccan dirham (MAD). Bring some cash for markets, tips and small purchases, since cards are not accepted everywhere, especially outside the cities.
Do people speak English in Morocco?
Arabic and Amazigh (Berber) are the main languages, and French is widely spoken. English and Spanish are common in tourist areas. Our guides speak English and Spanish.
Is a private tour better than a group tour?
A private tour gives you your own driver and guide, flexible stops and your own pace, which suits couples, families and small groups. Group tours can cost less per person but follow a fixed schedule.
What is included in a private Morocco tour?
It usually includes transport with a driver, a local guide and accommodation such as riads or desert camps. Meals, extra stops and activities vary, so we confirm everything in your free quote.
How much do Morocco tours cost?
Prices vary a lot depending on the number of days, the season, the group size and the type of accommodation. We quote on request, and quotes are free and come with no obligation.
Can I visit the Sahara in one day from Marrakech?
Not comfortably. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are about 560 km from Marrakech, so we recommend at least 2 days. For one day, our day trips to the Ourika Valley, Ouzoud Waterfalls and Ait Ben Haddou are a better choice.
Can I travel to Morocco during Ramadan?
Yes, but daytime opening hours, restaurants and transport can change, and the dates move every year. Tell us when you plan to travel and we will adapt your itinerary.
How do I book a Morocco tour with Highlights Morocco Tours?
Send us your dates and number of travellers with the contact form, by WhatsApp or by email. We reply with a free, no-obligation quote and, when you are happy with it, we confirm the booking.
