The short answer
Choose the Agafay desert if you have only an evening or a day near Marrakech and want a relaxed sunset, a camel ride and dinner in a desert camp, about an hour from the city. Choose the Sahara at Merzouga if you want real sand dunes, a longer camel trek and a night under the stars, and you can spend at least 2 to 3 days on the trip. The Agafay is a stony desert with Atlas views, and the Sahara is the classic dune landscape of Erg Chebbi.
Both are good, but they are very different experiences. This guide compares them honestly, so you can choose the one that fits your time and expectations. When you want help, message us on WhatsApp and we plan it for you.

The figures are approximate and depend on traffic, stops and the camp you choose.
The Agafay desert: what to expect
The Agafay is a rocky plateau of pale hills and empty valleys, with the snowy peaks of the High Atlas on the horizon in winter. It is not a sandy desert, but the open space, the light at sunset and the silence are real. Because it is so close to Marrakech, it is popular for a sunset camel ride, a dinner in a desert camp and an evening of music around a fire.
- Easy to reach: around an hour from the city, so no early start and no long drive.
- Short and relaxed: a good fit for families, a first evening or a last evening in Morocco.
- Limited dunes: do not expect tall sand dunes or the classic postcard image of the Sahara.
- Choose the camp carefully: quality varies, so check what is included before you book.

The Sahara at Merzouga: what to expect
The Sahara near Merzouga is where the big dunes of Erg Chebbi rise from the sand, glowing orange at sunrise and sunset. A camel trek takes you to a desert camp, where you have dinner, music and a night under a sky full of stars. The price of that experience is the distance: you cross the High Atlas and the Dades and Todra areas to get there, which is why we recommend 3 days rather than 2.
- Real dunes: the landscape most people picture when they think of the Sahara.
- A journey, not only a destination: Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Gorges and the Draa and Ziz valleys are part of the trip.
- Better for photos and stars: sunrise on the dunes and a dark night sky.
- More time needed: plan at least 2 days, and ideally 3 or 4.

Agafay desert vs Sahara: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Agafay desert and the Sahara?
The Agafay is a stony plateau with low hills and views of the Atlas, about an hour from Marrakech. The Sahara at Merzouga has the real sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, but it is much farther away and needs at least two days. Agafay suits a short evening, and the Sahara suits a proper desert experience.
Is the Agafay desert a real desert?
It is a rocky, semi-arid desert with little sand. It is beautiful at sunset and has an open, empty feel, but it does not have tall sand dunes. If you want dunes, you need to go to Merzouga or Zagora.
How far is the Agafay desert from Marrakech?
It is roughly 40 kilometres from Marrakech, around 45 to 60 minutes by road depending on traffic and the camp you choose. That is why it works as a half day or an evening outing.
How far is the Sahara from Marrakech?
Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are roughly 560 kilometres from Marrakech, a long day of driving of about 9 to 10 hours with stops. Zagora is closer, at around 350 kilometres. This is why Sahara tours from Marrakech last 2 to 4 days.
Can I see the Sahara dunes from Marrakech in one day?
No. The distance is too long for a comfortable day trip, and the best moments, sunset and sunrise on the dunes, need a night in the desert. Plan at least a 2-day tour, and a 3-day tour if you can, so the drive is less rushed.
Which is better for a first trip to Morocco?
If you have only a day or two around Marrakech, the Agafay is an easy, relaxed choice. If you have three days or more and want the classic dunes, camel trek and night under the stars, the Sahara at Merzouga is the better and more memorable choice.
Can I ride camels in the Agafay desert?
Yes, camel rides at sunset are common in the Agafay. The experience is shorter and the landscape is rocky rather than sandy. For a longer trek on real dunes, choose the Sahara.
Which desert is better for stargazing?
Both can have clear night skies. The Sahara at Merzouga is farther from city lights, so the sky is usually darker and the stars brighter. The Agafay is closer to Marrakech, so some light can be visible on the horizon.
Should I do the Agafay and the Sahara on the same trip?
You can, if you have time. Many travellers do the Agafay for a relaxed evening at the start or end of their stay in Marrakech, and join a 3-day Sahara tour for the dunes. They are different experiences rather than alternatives.
Is the Sahara tour from Marrakech tiring?
The drive is long, but it crosses the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades and Todra areas, so it is part of the trip. A 3-day tour is more comfortable than a 2-day tour. Read our guide to choosing a Sahara tour before you book.
